Nowadays, you can purchase a domain name anywhere from $2.95 to $8.95. At these prices it is easy to build a domain portfolio that will generate an income each and every month. It is also important to note that you don’t need a website to run this kind of business. The process looks simple on paper:
- investigate potential profitable domain names
- purchase the domain name
- point your domain name to a domain parking service
- get check at end of month
While the steps are short and easy, getting through each step can take some time, luck and experience. Finding profitable, unregistered domains is getting tougher, but there are still plenty of them available. In the last year I have registered several that each get over 50 unique visitors per day. This may not seem like a lot (and to be honest, it’s not), but if the traffic is targeted you can easily turn those 50 visitors into $0.50 per day. Again, that is not much, but I want to err on the side of caution. My best performing domain last month made $39.31 on 3 visitors per day. In order to be profitable, you only need to make $0.03 per day! That is not much profit, but to break even for the year you only need $0.02 per day on your domains. If you register domain names that barely break even after managing them for a year - don’t renew them. Just let them expire. I promise, you will register those kinds of names, but as long as you can break even you didn’t lose anything.
Scalability
The power in running a low traffic domain name business is that it scales. A single domain name making $0.20 per day isn’t much. The fact is you’ll starve waiting for enough money to buy groceries. But, 1000 domains, making $0.20 per day and suddenly your talking $200 per day. Enough money for most people to quit their day job or at least slow down on the hours. Having 1000’s of domain name is very common for those people that work in this industry. Most people have taken a year or longer to get at that level…
